About This Website (Updated March 28, 2009)
This is just a website I maintain as my personal space on the Internet. I don't particularly care for so-called social networking sites, for various reasons, but I've had this domain name for a few years as my own personal piece of the web.

My name is Justin Nelson, I live in Cedar Lake, Indiana, and I'm into computer programming, both professionally and as a hobby. In 1981 my father brought home a Commodore VIC-20, and I've been hooked ever since. At six years old I wrote my first program - a Tic-Tac-Toe game written in BASIC.

I've always been interested in audio, electronics, and computers. As a result, I currently have two products available - a Windows-based DJ/Karaoke system, and a Windows sound editor. They can be found at the web sites below: New Resume (posted March 28, 2009)
I've posted an updated resume online tonight. I have a web version here, and a Microsoft Word .doc file here.

I did some research, and apparently the one page rule still applies today, even for people seeking employment in a technical field... so I created a short single page version of my resume. You can view it here. It's a quick read, covers the important points, and most importantly, it's only one page :)

Note: for the .doc versions of my resume, you might need to right-click and choose "Save As..." depending on your browser. Either way, you will need Microsoft Word (or a compatible reader) to view them. If that does not work for you, the web-based HTML version is available here.

Pictures (December 2003 - very old!)
I finally posted some pictures. I recently bought a digital camera, and certain pictures I just had to share. Check out the pictures page.

mod_gzip
I got bored today and installed mod_gzip on the server. This means that all text/html content is compressed by up to 90%! (Update: I've disabled mod_gzip for now, as it was causing problems with certain dynamic content... will enable it again at a later date)

Another mod_gzip update
I finally re-enabled mod_gzip. I have specifically excluded PHP files and other dynamic content. Only .html, .txt, .css, and .js files are processed, as are directory listings. This is not all that useful, but if you check out the large HTML files in /docs/, you will likely notice a speed difference.

If your browser supports it (Mozilla/MSIE should), see how long it takes to snag this very large list of all man pages on this machine, or the RFC directory listing. Should be up to 10x faster than before...

New Rant: Spammers
I hate spammers. Lately, they're forging one of my addresses as the Return-Path in their spam, causing me all sorts of hell. Read more here.

News: Man Pages Online
Since I now have my own server, I decided to put man pages online. It's a custom wrapper around man2html, with cross-reference links, search capabilities, and more. Click Here to check it out.

I've also uploaded a bit of HTML documentation. Also on that page are all RFCs, indexed and searchable.

What is JM4N.com?
This is the personal website for Justin Nelson. I often use the name Jm4n (pronounced Jay Man) online, so I figured I'd get the domain. I like short domain names. I also recently started a DJ service, and I use the name Jay Man (or J-Man) as my DJ name.

I have added/updated the Linux section. I will be offering many security tools in the future. For now, my saudit.pl script is available for download. It's a simple Perl script that assists in performing a Set-UID audit on your Linux system.

The saudit.pl script has been updated on July 19, 2003, to log all of its actions. This allows you to easily undo any changes you did, by simply looking in the log file. It doesn't log much yet, but a future update will also log the before and after permission settings, etc. For now, it just logs what files have been modified.

Who are you?
I'm a programmer, systems administrator, and just all-around geek. I have many projects going on -- everything from tweaking the USB Audio driver in the Linux kernel, to writing Windows Shareware.

If you wish to contact me, please email J-Man at JM4N dot Com. That is the only address I accept mail for, due to the severe amount of spam this domain receives. Note that this address is subject to change if the spammers get ahold of it...
